WHAT did the whole family sayWelllisten first to what little Mary said

It was little Mary's birthdaythe loveliest of all daysshe thoughtAll her little friends came to play with herand she wore the most beautiful dressshe had got itfrom her Grandmotherwho was now with the good Godbut Grandmother herself had cut and sewed it before she went up into the brightbeautiful heaven

The table in Mary's room shone with presentsthere was the neatest little kitchenwith all that belongs to akitchen and a doll which could roll its eyes and say"Au"when one pressed its stomachthere was also a picture book with the loveliest stories to readif one could readBut it was nicer even than all the stories to live through many birthdays

"Yesit is lovely to live"said little Mary

Godfather added that it was the loveliest fairy tale

In the room close by were Mary's two brothersthey were big boysthe one nine years oldthe other elevenThey also thought it was lovely to be aliveto live in their waynot to be a child like Marybut to be smart school-boysto have "excellent" in the character bookand to be able to enjoy a fight with their companionsto skate in winterand to ride velocipedes in summerto read about castlesdrawbridgesand prisonsand to hear about discoveries in the heart of AfricaOne of the boys hadhow-everone anxietythat everything would be discovered before he grew uphe wanted to go in quest of adventures thenLife is the most lovely story of adventureGodfathersaidand one takes part in it oneself

"It repeats old memories to me"said Godfatherandto little Mary it seemed as if many pictures showed themselves in the fire

But in the big bookcase close bystood the realbooksone of these Godfather read very oftenand hecalled it the Book of booksit was the BibleThereinpictures was shown the whole history of man and of theworldthe creationthe floodthe kings and the King ofkings

"All that has happened and will happen stands in thisbook"said Godfather"So infinitely much in a littlebookthink of itEverything that a man has to pray foris said and put in few words in the Lord's PrayerIt is adrop of gracea pearl of comfort from GodIt is laid as agift on the cradle ot the childat the child's heartLittlechildkeep it carefullynever lose ithowever big yougrowand then you will not be left alone on the changingpathsit will shine in on you and you will not be lost"

Godfather's eyes shone at thatthey beamed withjoyOnce in earlier days they had wept"and that wasalso good"he said"it was a time of trial when thingslooked greyNow I have sunshine about me and in meThe older one growsthe better one sees both in prosperi-ty and adversitythat our Father is always with usthatlife is the loveliest fairy taleand only He can give usthatand it lasts into eternity"

"It is lovely to live"said little Mary

The little and the big boys said so tooFather andMother and the whole family said itbut above all Godfatherand he had experiencehe was the oldest of themallhe knew all the storiesall the fairy talesand hesaidand that right out of his heart.,"Life is the loveliest fairy tale!”
